Tourism of Economic Discovery... a leisure in full growth
CERN at Geneva
In 2004 in France, 14.7 millions persons visited a company, a technological site or a technical museum.
Searching for meaning, looking for authenticity, going back to our roots, asking questions on what we consume, curiosity, questions about recent scientific challenges ..., all these motivations are favourable elements to the development of industrial, scientific and technical tourism.
This new form of tourism may be defined as the discovery, by the public, of a site showing a know-how belonging to the past, or to the present, or to the future, and may concern :
  • Visiting existing companies, i.e. sites of production,
  • Tourism of industrial patrimony, which gathers sites valorising production and know-how belonging to history and to the past, i.e. technical museums, small local museums...
  • Scientific tourism, which objective is to spread scientific culture as widely as possible, i.e. planetariums, CCST...
